Qatargas has shed light on its approach to quality human capital development in the 8th GCC Quality Conference which was held on 10th November at Sheraton Doha Hotel.
Qatargas was a Gold Sponsor of the conference which was officially inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. Issa Saad Al-Jafali Al-Nuaimi, Minister of Administrative Development of the State of Qatar, who also felicitated the event’s sponsors at the plenary session. Azam Abdul Aziz Al Mannai, Qatargas Public Relations Manager, received a memento from the Minister as a token of appreciation for Qatargas.
Adnan Hassan Al Shaibi, the Learning and Development Manager at Qatargas, presented a paper at the conference titled “Quality Human Capital Development,” in which he shared Qatargas’ experience in implementing and utilising Talent Management as a tool and process to ensure the presence of a high caliber and diverse workforce, which is one of the five pillars Qatargas’ direction statement sits on.
He noted that Qatargas’ talent management is the structured process by which managers and supervisors define the skills, knowledge, and attitude required for different positions and checking, via assessment and performance appraisal, that the positions’ requirements are demonstrated by employees across the Company.
He added: “Skills are continuously developed, any gaps identified from the performance management cycle, technical competence assessments or development needs for future successors are addressed by tailored development plans. In this regard, Qatargas adopts the most effective “70-20-10” formula to build people’s competence. This formula is based on the principle that people develop 70 per cent of their competencies from real life and on-the-job tasks and assignments; 20 per cent from feedback and from observing and working with and being coached by role models; and 10 per cent from formal training.”
Explaining the Company’s Qatarisation efforts, Al Shaibi said Qatargas offers various programs to attract Qatari nationals to the Company’s workforce and help develop their skills. Qatari nationals can join Qatargas as “Graduates” and a tailored program called an Individual Development Plan (IDP) is offered to them which includes development of their behavioural and technical skills. Qatari nationals joining the Company as “Trainees” are offered specially-designed programmes to develop their behavioural and technical skills. The Company also sponsors and provides scholarships to selected Qatari Nationals from universities and colleges who will be recruited as national graduates. Internships are offered to Qatari National High school and University students to provide them exposure to the LNG Industry.
As a result of the quality of the human capital development programme of Qatargas, Al Shaibi said, the Company has earned several international accreditations including the Gold level accreditation with ‘Investors in People,’ an international business improvement tool administered by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and supported by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
